just not a good time!

Let's be honest. I hear people say em' to me and and I say em' to people sometimes or most of the time...

The most common excuses that you could come up with to instantly end a conversation with a friend OR stranger over the phone are:

a) I gotta go. My boss is coming to my cubible. - not even at your office
b) I can't talk now. Will definately call you back. - no intention to
c) Hey man! Nature's call. I need to go to the bathroom. - bladder or
colon not even a quarter full
d) I am very busy. Can you call me later? - will never pick up the phone
later
e) You'll see me there if I plan to show up. - WHAT???

You know, the funny thing is often people will still "believe" us again and again although they have heard those excuses before.

Hey if you have better ones, do share with me.

I find those people soliciting for credit card business a pain in the butt. For me it's quite easy, i just tell them i don't earn $30k a month, which is the truth. U need to earn S$30k a month to qualify for credit card in Singapore. Just tell them you're busy and hang up, simple as that :)

Hello Friend,

Are you from Singapore? U look like a Taiwanese. Maybe that's why you've never seen zig-zag lines on the roads before :)

I usually just say I'm busy and that I'll call back later - of which I do, unless it was a sales call of course.

Speaking of which, they are darn annoying and borderline funny. Looking through my emails I got an offer for a 60% discount on 'get a stiffy, in a jiffy'. I cracked up on that one. Thank goodness it was just an email and not a salesman that knocked on my door with the same offer.

Take care.

"Well, I'm done. Thanks. Bye"

A friend of mine spent a lot of time and effort teaching me to be less abrupt in finishing off a call.

I use the other excuses (but only if they are true). I see no point in lying - except to marketers.

Favourite lies to marketers:

"I'm moving at the end of the month."

"I'm a little tight on money because I just lost my job."

"I'm sorry, he's not in at the moment. Can I take a message?"

Based on comments from fellow bloggers, you can see that there are many "reasonable" excuses which you can use. Just make sure that you don't use the same one over and over again.

I was once taught by a friend to scratch the mouthpiece of the telephone (not mobile phone - how could you "scratch" it?) with something. Fingernails will also do. It will create a very-bad-reception sound at the other end. Sounded quite genuine. Then you can use this as an excuse to hang off. Trust me, it works!
